WINIFRED BIRD

writer + translator

Recently I've been working on the translation of a book about Ako dantsu, a type of handwoven cotton rug from the coast of Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. The book is being published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Naka Kojima, who founded the industry in an era when women rarely played such prominent roles in the business world. I'll post more information about the book when it's available! My involvement in the project stemmed from a translation on the same topic I did for Subsequence magazine last year, which you can read here.

My translation of the novel version of Mamoru Hosoda's hit feature animation Belle will be published April 18 by Yen Press. It's a digital-age adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. This is the third book of Hosoda's that I've translated; the others are Mirai and Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki.

Eating Wild Japan made the bestseller list at my gem of a local bookstore, Fair Isle Books. Much gratitude to owner Deb Wayman, who somehow manages to sell copies of a book about foraging in Japan on an island in Wisconsin.
