The latest issue of Kyoto Journal opens with a photo essay by Russel Wong on the old and now-demolished Hotel Okura. (The photo for the “Architecture & Design” section on the Writing page of this website was taken from the old lobby balcony, where I spent a very peaceful half hour during a visit in 2015, convinced I had time-travelled back to 1965.) It continues with a great lineup of articles on contemporary art and design in Asia. There’s also an interview with Gary Snyder about his new book on nature and culture in China and Japan, The Great Clod. The interviewer’s first question is whether or not Snyder is ready to die. Snyder appears unruffled. “Yeah. It’s not a big deal. That’s not a big deal,” he says.
